Le Marche region is geographically characterized by mountain reliefs over the almost entire surface, from the internal area to the sea. The Apennine Chain covers the Italian peninsula and in Le Marche is located near the border with Umbria: from here starts his path toward the coast and trough sweet and sinuous hilly slopes.
The mountainous conformation of le Marche has been very decisive for the settlement since ancient times. There are infact picturesque villages perched high on the slopes, which are also enriched by geometric farmland decorations that alternate with green wooded areas.

The most part of the city in Le Marche is located in this varied and colorful landscape. They have mostly ancient origins and overlap previous human settlements. Generally developed on slopes and upon numerous hills, they decorate the territory with rural villages, fortresses and castles, wich are tangible signs of local lords' powers and activities.

The area located at the north side of the region is known as Montefeltro and keeps numerous remains expecially of the Duchy of Urbino. It is located in the northwest of  Le Marche and belongs nowdays to the province of Pesaro and Urbino.
This territory has a wide well preserved cultural heritage, linked to the major historical periods: from archaeological areas and medieval monumets to the Renaissance era, in which will be found the highest artistic expression. That heritage includes not only historical towns and villages, but also churches, abbeys, fortresses and many towers, in addition to all those military stuctures which are characteristic of the defensive system in this area.

The city of Urbino, the capital of the ancient Duchy, is certainly one of the most interesting city in the Marche and in central Italy. The historical center, today belonging to UNESCO, is the output of a long renovation which expenses were bore mainly by the family of Montefeltro, that owned the city since the XII century until the beginning of the'500. But it was mainly thanks to the Duke Frederick II from Montefeltro (1422-1482), patron of Literature and Arts, that Urbino was transformed in an important cultural center full of monuments and buildings of extraordinary beauty: first of all the Ducal Palace, symbol of the city.

This territory is also connected to the main European capitals through the near airports, expecially  Ancona Airport and Forlì Airport. 
Le Marche are also accessible by car using the main Italian roads, all connected with the Highway A14 Bologna-Bari, which travels from north to south of the reagion, near the coast. In this way you will have easy connections to the inner cities of the region.
At last also the national rail network and the internal road network guarantee valid connection from Marche to Rome and other parts of central Italy such as Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.
